Project preparation
The days before a renovation are easier when everyone knows how the home will function during the work. Alongside material choices, plan where belongings will go, how the work area will be reached, and which routines need a temporary alternative.
1. Confirm the work area and access
Ask which rooms and routes will be needed, where materials may be stored, and what should be cleared before the start. Discuss parking, deliveries, stairs, pets, and any household schedule that affects access. Agree on how the property will be secured at the end of each workday.
Do not pack away everything before this conversation. You may need access to a shutoff, panel, doorway, or storage area. Make a room-by-room list based on the actual scope so preparation supports the work.
2. Create a workable temporary routine
For a kitchen project, identify a place for basic meal preparation and daily essentials. For a bathroom, discuss which fixtures will be unavailable and whether another bathroom can be used. For an office, decide where calls and focused work can happen while the room is disrupted.
Keep necessary items together and label packed boxes by room. Move fragile, valuable, or sentimental belongings out of the work area yourself. Confirm how larger furniture will be handled rather than assuming moving it is included.
3. Discuss dust, ventilation, and separation
Ask how the work area will be separated from occupied rooms, what protection is included, and how cleanup will be handled. Share relevant household needs before work starts so arrangements can be discussed.

4. Agree on communication and decisions
Choose a main point of contact and a place to keep product selections, written approvals, and schedule updates. Confirm how changes to the scope will be documented before additional work proceeds. Ask which decisions are needed early and which can wait.
